Tips For Buying A Great Tuxedo
Our rental tuxedos will look just as good!
- The Shirt
- Make sure the sleeves are long enough to fold backward to apply cufflinks without exposing your forearm
- Choose a collar that you like (turndown collars are softer, wingtip collars are more traditional)
- The bib (front part) should extend past the waistband of your pants
- Unless you need a different color, white is the standard color
- The Vest
- It's best to stick to the traditional colors (black, white) when purchasing your first tuxedo
- The number of buttons is completely a personal preference
- The vest should be relaxed and comfortable, not baggy or restrictive
- The Cummerbund (A.K.A. cumberbund)
- The cummerbund is not worn with a vest
- The only neckwear worn with a cummerbund (traditionally) is a bow tie
- It is generally reserved for very formal (black–tie) events
- For your first tuxedo, don't worry about it
- The Tie
- Bow ties are traditional and very formal
- pre–tied bow ties are perfectly acceptable
- clip–on bow ties are not acceptable for adults
- go with the size and shape bow tie that looks best to you
- Neckties are more relaxed, but still formal
- pre–tied neckties are perfectly acceptable
- clip–on neckties are not acceptable for adults
- No tie is generally reserved for specialty shirts
- Ascots and Shar–Pei Cravats are not very common
- Bow ties are traditional and very formal
- The Jacket
- A lightweight material is breathable and comfortable
- Single or double breasted is your choice
- Tails or no tails is also your choice (tails is very formal)
- If it feels good and looks good, it probably is good
- The Pants
- Vertical pockets are formal
- Pants with 2 stripes should be partnered with jackets with tails
- Pants with one stripe should be partnered with jackets without tails
- The pants should rest comfortably on your waist, not below
- The Socks
- Best rule of thumb is go with solid color dress socks that compliment or match your tux
- Thin
moisture wicking
socks are best
- The Shoes
- lightweight, leather soled, high gloss shoes are best for multi–use
- multi–color (white and black most common) shoes are less formal
